Treating Metatarsalgia in Lumberton, Lauinburg & Fayetteville Areas
Metatarsalgia is a collection of symptoms that is generally evidenced by pain and inflammation in the ball of the foot. At The Foot & Ankle Institute of Lumberton, we regularly see this irritating, sometimes debilitating, condition and have excellent results in restoring our patients back to their full abilities. Sharp and shooting or dull and bruised sensations may occur in the bottom of the feet near the toes, and some people experience tingly or numb feelings. Causes of this localized discomfort and swelling include being overweight, wearing improperly fitted shoes, developing bunions or arthritis around the big toe and getting a metatarsal stress fracture.
Treatment Options We Offer
A good podiatrist knows that metatarsalgia treatment is best suited to the original cause of the pain. Since this condition can come from so many different angles, we strive to treat it individually and truly address the root issues that are arising in the feet. If you consistently wear shoes that put a lot of stress on the ball of your foot, we may recommend that you take those shoes out of the picture and wear a more supportive sole. If your pain is connected to a bunion or other pre-existing condition, it is imperative that we also address that issue. In the case of a stress fracture, a hairline break of the bone along the second, third or fourth metatarsal can occur (otherwise known as march fractures because soldiers who marched without stopping were known to develop them). Treatment for this type of fracture may involve a compression bandage, cast and special insoles.
